The Orange Door
The Orange Door Support and Safety Hubs are a new way for women, children and young people who are experiencing family violence, or families who need assistance with the care and wellbeing of children, to access the services they need.
The hubs safely connect people directly to services and provide a coordinated response to a range of different needs, including when required a whole-of-family support and holding perpetrators to account.
The Orange Door hubs represent a major change in the way specialist family violence, family and children services and general services such as doctors, schools and hospitals are coordinated and connected to better respond to family violence and vulnerable children.
Hubs are also equipped with the training and tools to know more about the perpetrator. They can better assess risk, with expertise to engage perpetrators to challenge and change their behaviour.
A key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Family Violence and the Roadmap to Reform, the hubs form part of a long-term plan to end family violence in Victoria and better support and protect vulnerable children.
HELPING TO BUILD STRONGER FAMILIES
Similar to Child FIRST, The Orange Door provides one access point for women, children and families to receive support if they are experiencing family violence, or any issue that impacts on child wellbeing and family function. In many cases, families will be referred onto the NEMA Integrated Family Services Alliance for case work and therapeutic interventions.
Child FIRST now operates through The Orange Door at Heidelberg, along with Berry Street Family Violence services, Dianella Plenty Valley (DPV) men’s services, VACCA and DHHS Community Based Child Protection.
Who should contact The Orange Door?
• a person being hurt, controlled or being made afraid by someone close to them, such as their partner, family member, housemate or carer
• someone struggling with parenting due to family conflict, money issues, illness, addiction, grief or isolation
• anyone concerned about the safety and wellbeing of a child or young person
• anyone concerned about the safety of a friend or family member
