Mentoring Mums

Mentoring Mums is an early intervention and prevention program working with vulnerable and expectant mothers. Mums who participate in the program come from diverse backgrounds and are experiencing a degree of social isolation and vulnerability.

Mentors are volunteers who are mothers themselves and come from a broad cross section of the community. They are the mothers of young children, grandmothers, working mums and have a vast range of experience including nursing, social work, teaching, early education and their own personal experiences of being a mum.

Volunteer Mentors are recruited and undergo induction and comprehensive training that covers topics such as; child development, attachment and bonding, child abuse and reporting, communication, family violence, post-natal depression and child vehicle safety.

What our volunteers and participants say about this program

"It is perfect, particularly for people who don't have a family. When you are isolated, it's that extra link you really need." Emily, Mum of Luke, Rebekah & Lucy

"I enjoy supporting women as mothers in different circumstances and the bond that I form with the mums. I think the program is rewarding for both sides. I like to think I can make a difference to a child's relationship with their mum which hopefully has positive longer term impacts. It's really about two mums coming together to share their stories. It's a challenging time for most women let alone if you have difficult life circumstances." Jenny, Mentoring Mum

What's involved in this role

The Mentor works with mum to build a trusting and consistent relationship, visiting her at home and spending time getting to know her and her child.  Mentors support mum in her parenting role and assist in connecting her to the community, encouraging access to health services, maternal and child health programs, parenting services and other community groups.

Program Evaluation

In January 2009 Melbourne University was engaged to provide an action research evaluation to assist in the future development and implementation of Mentoring Mums. Released mid-2010, the report provided a snapshot of the achievements to date, the data and findings which formed a basis for the program’s future planning.
